The United Nations is investigating a dating service in Japan after allegations high school girls are being pressured into having sex with customers.
But the UN is worried that the minors involved in the business are very susceptible to sexual exploitation and prostitution.
Sometimes the Joshi Kousei girls are paid $40 to $50 an hour to simply accompany their customer. Aiki Segawa from NPO Lighthouse, a Tokyo-based centre for human trafficking victims, told the ABC it was very easy for customers to push the boundaries."There's a possibility that they have to, for example, have sex with these men and they would be paid more," Ms Segawa said."Maybe at a cafe or at the venue of the business, maybe what they do is (when) talking and having tea they exchange their contact information there."[But] the men could easily contact the girl and ask those girls to answer their request by saying that they would pay more money."Ms Segawa added that police rarely cracked down on the industry unless there was a victim complaint."I think it's very difficult for the police to actually accuse the business and arrest them, because what they promote is they say that they're paying a salary to have these high school girls to do part-time jobs and that there's no sexual things going on," she said.
Yuki Imoto, assistant professor in sociology of youth at Tokyo's Keio University, said an ailing economy was one reason young girls were attracted to the Joshi Kousei industry."The girls coming now, it seems it's not just about their interest in going out on dates and so on, but there's actually some economic need, particularly because many of the girls are coming from cities and regions outside of Tokyo," said Ms Imoto.
An American former reporter for Japan's public broadcaster NHK has been arrested for possession of a video showing him having sex with a 17-year-old high-school girl.
Alex Zelikow, 30, took a video of himself and the girl using a hidden camera at his apartment in central Tokyo in 2012, while he was working at NHK, after meeting her on a social networking site and offering to teach her English, according to local reports.
The video was discovered when Tokyo Metropolitan Police searched his apartment, for an undisclosed reason, in 2013.
Zelikow fled the country shortly afterwards and recently returned on a tourist visa, local reports said.
He was arrested under Japan's child pornography law.
A former reporter for various NHK programs, Zelikow also worked as an editor, translator, rewriter of TV scripts and actor at the public broadcaster, according to his Linked In page.
